Ear surgery will enhance your appearance by setting prominent ears back closer to your head or reduce the size of large ears.

Most patients, young and old alike, are thrilled with the results of ear surgery. If you are considering otoplasty for your child—keep in mind that ears usually reach adult size by the age of four or five.

Your Surgery

Your surgery will be performed under local anesthesia with supplemental IV sedation for older children and adults, general anesthesia for small children. The surgery is done on an outpatient basis, takes from 1-3 hours and you can return home that day. Your ears will be slightly swollen, and possibly bruised, but discomfort is usually minimal and easily controlled with medication. Stitches will be removed in one week, or dissolve. Some patients return to work in one to two days. A consideration, for both children and adults, is the necessity to wear a “head band” over the ears continually for six weeks, day and night. After that, it only needs to be worn at night for an additional period of six months.

The best candidates for otoplasty are those who are healthy and have realistic expectations. We invite you to schedule a private consultation with Dr. Bennett or one of our nurse coordinators. It should not be expected that both ears will be identical after surgery, because, chances are; both ears were not identical before surgery. During the consultation all aspects of your proposed surgery will be discussed including preparation, relative risks, recovery, range of fees, and financing options. We gladly schedule from one to two hours for your consultation. We encourage you to ask questions and express your needs and concerns in a relaxed and unhurried atmosphere.
